Story & Characters
Story Overview
MIO: Memories in Orbit centers on exploring The Vessel, a massive technological spaceship drifting aimlessly in space. Players wake up as MIO, a sentient android robot, aboard the decaying ship that was originally designed to transport humans to a place called the Promised Land.
All the humans are gone, leaving only machines behind. The ship is now a field of ruins overgrown with lush vegetation and rogue machines, with its AI caretakers called "the Pearls" mysteriously non-functional.
MIO's goal is to find the five Voices—celestial overseers named The Breath, The Spine, The Hand, The Blood, and The Eye—and gather their Voices to kickstart The Heart and save the ship from destruction.
Main Character
MIO
MIO is a small, nimble, silent android with exceptional capabilities who is resourceful and relentless. Rather than focusing on MIO as the main character, the game emphasizes The Vessel itself as central to the story.
MIO interacts with other machines aboard The Vessel, offering and receiving kindness from them. The other inhabitants aboard are fearful but persist despite hopelessness.
The Voices (The Pearls)
The Vessel is led by The Heart and five different Voices—celestial overseers that serve as AI caretakers. These Voices have mysteriously become non-functional. MIO must reconnect with these keepers and gather their Voices to kickstart The Heart and prevent the ship's destruction.
The Breath
One of the five Voices that MIO must find and restore.
The Spine
One of the five Voices that MIO must find and restore.
The Hand
One of the five Voices that MIO must find and restore. The Hand has the most involved story arc among the Voices.
The Blood
One of the five Voices that MIO must find and restore.
The Eye
One of the five Voices that MIO must find and restore.
The Heart
The Heart is the central system of The Vessel. MIO's ultimate goal is to kickstart The Heart by gathering the Voices from all five celestial overseers, preventing the ship from destruction.
The Vessel
The Vessel itself is central to the story. Rather than focusing solely on MIO as the main character, the game emphasizes The Vessel as the true protagonist—a massive technological spaceship with its own history and mysteries.
The Vessel's History
- • Originally designed to transport humans to the Promised Land
- • Now drifts aimlessly in space
- • Overgrown with lush vegetation
- • Populated by rogue machines
- • Its AI caretakers (the Pearls) are non-functional
- • A field of ruins with hidden secrets
Other Characters
AI (MIO's Sister)
AI is MIO's sister who doesn't want MIO to obtain all the Voices. However, her appearances are sporadic throughout the story, making her role less prominent than it could have been.
Tommo
Tommo is an investigator who has been exploring The Vessel and revealing revelations through data pads left behind. Much of the story context comes from Tommo's discoveries rather than direct character interactions.
Other Inhabitants
Throughout The Vessel, MIO encounters other machines and robots. These inhabitants are fearful but persist despite hopelessness. MIO can interact with damaged robots to repair them, gaining valuable bonuses and uncovering the ship's past.
Some robots offer their own takes on situations, like telling you about the status of each Voice. Occasionally, some will require help, though these interactions are relatively simple. The relationships between MIO and these machines are built on mutual kindness—MIO offers help, and the machines provide assistance and story context in return.
Note: The story uses environmental storytelling and data pads rather than extensive character development. You'll see MIO's cryptic thoughts while traversing inner self stages, but these moments are few and far between, often occurring when you're focused on mastering new abilities.
